Dumbening continues apace

I think Algebra 1 was a requirement to graduate high school back in my time, maybe Algebra 2, I barely made it through algebra 2… passed with like a C- or some shit.

I have to agree with this:

Oakley is among a growing number of educators who view intermediate algebra as an obstacle to students obtaining their credentials — particularly in fields that require no higher level math skills.

Their thinking has led to initiatives like Community College Pathways, which strays away from abstract algebra to engage students in real-world math applications.

I used to tutor high school maths and a lack of understanding of application was one of the biggest hurdles in getting students not only interested, but to the point of understanding.

I don’t think we should do away with algebra but making it more relevant or integrated would be much better.

Perhaps they can use it to calculate how much that payday loan really costs…

That would be an application that could work.

I think people should be taught how to live off the land, recycle, build houses and water cleaning system

They should learn how to use plants as medicine and how clean the land and water we made filth

School doesn’t teach real life skills.

It’s scary to see the house of the castle of cards we built

And that shit is crumbling right in front of our eyes and we’re more worried in keeping it standing up than picking up the pieces and disassembling it slowly, to avoid it collapsing at once and burying us all

Algebra, like basic English, is a high school level of education. If a kid gets to college and lacks these skills, the taxpayer has no business subsidizing the remediation of that ignorance.
