Their death toll in combat was appalling.

There were rampant rumors when I was in boot, in the later 70’s that there was a de facto “Company” of freshly recruited boots, that once discovered to be illiterate, were send to a remedial education company where they had very basic reading and writing lessons drilled into their heads, until most of them ended up getting sent home.
